Timothy Dickens, a foreign attorney (UK and SA) at DR & AJU LLC, served as a speaker at the Seoul ADR Festival 2022 held in the conference room of DR & AJU on the 10th.
The Seoul ADR Festival (“SAF”) was first launched in 2015 by the Korean Commercial Arbitration Board (KCAB), co-hosted by the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL), the Ministry of Justice, the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), In-House Counsel Forum (IHCF), the Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA), the Content Dispute Resolution Committee (CDRC), the Korea Entertainment Law Society (KELS), the Seoul International Arbitration Center (SIDRC), Thomson Reuters, and the Korea International Arbitration Agency (KICA). Since then, the SAF has continuously provided a platform to exchange ideas and accommodate the growing demand for ADR services in legal sector and academia.
This year’s Seoul ADR Festival 2022 was held from November 7th (Mon.) to 11th (Fri.), and the KCAB co-hosted the event with the UNCITRAL, the Ministry of Justice, and the ICC. As part of this festival, a panel discussion, “Arbitration in Southeast Asia: What lies beyond Singapore? Practical experiences in Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam” was held at DR & AJU on the 10th, which delved into the international arbitrators’ experiences in international arbitration in Southeast Asian countries beyond Singapore. As a panelist, foreign attorney Timothy Dickens (UK and SA) explained (i) Thailand's legal arbitration grounds, (ii) Thailand's arbitration organizations, (iii) Thailand's legal system and framework, and (iv) temporary measures in detail based on his experiences with international arbitration cases in Thailand.
During the question-and-answer sessions, participants asked practical questions about procedural issues, including the deadline for determination and the application for arbitration costs in Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam. Detailed answers were followed by Mr. Dickens, David MacArthur, a foreign attorney (US) at Anderson Mori Tomotsune, and Harold Sippel, a foreign attorney (Austria) at Skrine.
